Versa Drives launches India’s first remote-controlled ‘superfan’

Durgasharan K and Sundar Muruganandhan unveiling the Superfan in Chennai.
Chennai: Versa Drives Private Limited, a Coimbatore-based manufacturer of Motor Control Products, has unveiled, what is known as ‘Superfan’, India’s first remote-controlled ceiling fan which provides high speed and high air delivery with low power consumption.

Releasing the details in a press meet here, Sundar Muruganandhan, Founder and Managing Director of the firm, said, “The ’Superfan’ will be a convergence of technology and manufacturing advancement that will set it apart from other typical fans, saving considerable amount in nominal operation every fan per month. The new ingenious design aims at giving customers a premium yet pocket-friendly product.”

The fans are available in two variants – Basic and Premium models. In the Basic model, the remote control has on/off button with five keys to run at five different speeds. In the premium model, apart from the on/off keys and five speed adjustment keys, three more keys are provided for finer control for speed and run fan in preset mode to simulate breeze with variable air flow. The fans are priced at Rs 3000 onwards.

About the benefits, Sundar further said, “Our new range of superfan has features and benefits that provides unmatched value proposition to our customers. Our design team has used their knowledge, experience and tools like design and simulation software to develop motor and drive. The sensor-free design is a novelty and we are proud to present the innovative breakthrough to all our customers.”

He said, with such kind of super-efficient fan, India can save a lot of power. Giving the details number of fans installed and running in India, he said, “There are about 350 million fans running in India. And if one takes conservative estimate that each fan runs an average of 7 hours a day, they draw 13,650 MW of power or 95000 units per day. With superfans, we can reduce the power requirement to 50 per cent.”

The company is introducing superfans in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala and will diversify to other parts of the country in the coming years. When asked about the dealership and places to get the fans, Sundar said, “We will be marketing through online sources as we have kept the margin very low. We wanted to give the advanced technology to people without much incremental cost.”

Speaking on the specs of the fan, K Durasharan, Co-founder and Technical Director, said, “All the components of the fan are carefully selected to give a long and trouble-free life. The electronic parts chosen are from the industrial grade. The body is die-cast in aluminum, the blades are made of aluminum, ball bearings are from the well-known brand and the painted parts of power coated to ensure resilience and robustness of the product. Aluminum frames and blades ensure long life even in coastal areas. These fans have in-built computer control to keep the motor cool. So, it can run for 65000 hours continuously or 18 years when operated for 10 hours a day.”

Other advantages are, the super fans are voltage variation resistant and can give optimum performance between 160V-260v with the maximum speed of 385 RPM. Consuming 35 W (normal fans consume 75 W), these fans need no wiring change, no manual regulator and has highest power factor control compared to conventional ones available in the market. Also, these fans are manufactured using green technology as all electronic parts are made of non-hazardous material. Even the packaging is done using recycled material, Sundar said.

When asked about how the company has planned to compete with the established players, Sunder said, “We have the technology to our advantage. We are planning to sell more than 100,000 pieces this fiscal. There are two leading fan manufacturers who are in talks with us for possible collaboration. We are sure that our product will be able to tap the market. We are also applied for two patents – one for electronics and other for construction of motor.  As this is an energy-efficient fan made within ISO standards, we are sure that the government will give us highest rating of five star-plus or even more to our product,” signs off Sundar.

Superfans are available in three types – Comfort, Faast 48 and Faast 56 - depending upon the room size.
