The two day International seminar on “Pre Engineered and
Quick Launch Bridges” culminated on November 4 as a
successful event with representatives from Govt. Organizations namely Ministry
of Road Transport & Highways, Ministry of Railways, CPWD, DRDO, NIDM, Corps
of Engineers and Border Roads Organisation (BRO), industry, (consultants and
Private Firms) and international delegates having presented their papers on
various facets. The seminar was inaugurated by Union Minister of Road Transport
& Highways, Dr. C P Joshi on Saturday.
The two-day seminar was to bring out the existing technologies and explore options available to be adopted for existing Indian conditions. The ideas and concept discussed in this seminar will be compiled and submitted to various ministries to be considered during policy planning and inclusion into respective codes.
Day 1 went into Technical discussion, analysis, design, fabrication of Pre engineered steel bridges and Pre engineered concrete and composite bridges. Day 2 saw brainstorming and mind tickling discussions on Quick Launch Bridges in use and under development and currently available in International market, launching system for pre engineered bridges and flyovers and quality of materials their availability, aesthetics and on safety aspects.
The highlights of the International seminar were:-
(a) Focus on quick construction of bridges by Pre Engineering study practiced around the world.
(b) Important case studies gave insight into the likes of the Barapullah Bridge, Signature Bridge and the Common Suspension Bailey Bridge.
(c) The paper on Military bridge was an eye opener to many and set a trend towards understanding more clearly with ideas that evolve in the civil industry and Military R & D.
(d) Discussion on Aesthetics generated a great amount of interest.
The valedictory ceremony was presided over by the Engineer – in – Chief, Lt Gen Vijai Sharma, AVSM and Shri MC Bhide, President, Indian Institute of Bridges Engineers (IIBE) as guest of honour. Among the other dignitaries present were Shri C Kandasamy, DG (RD) Ministry of Road Transport and Highways & Spl Secretary to Government of India , Lt Gen S Ravi Shankar, PVSM, VSM, DGBR, Lt Gen A K Puri, PVSM , AVSM (Retd), Chairman, IIBE, DSC, Prof Mahesh Tandon, Chairman Scientific Committee.
